(英訳)「阪神淡路大震災の教訓をどう生かすべきか ～震災発生20年を迎えて」

2015年に書かれた、
「阪神淡路大震災の教訓をどう生かすべきか ～震災発生20年を迎えて」

をベースに、英訳の練習をし、ネイティブに見てもらいました。

日本語は分からないネイティブなので、日本語の直訳ではありません。

・「被災地は、人々が希望を取り戻せるまでに復興した」
(私) The earthquake-affected areas have already been rebuilt well enough for the people to regain hope.
(修正後) The earthquake-affected areas have already been sufficiently rebuilt for the people to regain hope in the future.

・「しかし私たちは、それだけ（このような単純な結論）で満足していてはいけない」
(私) However, we must not end up with such a simple conclusion.
(修正後) However, we must not be content with such a simple conclusion.
(ポイント)「満足し」をend up withに書き換える必要はなく、素直に日本語と同じ表現にして良かった。

・「地震によって得た教訓」
(私) lessons the earthquake gave us, lessons we gained from the earthquake
(修正後) lessons the earthquake taught us, lessons we learned from the earthquake

・「そのような教訓について、何が変わっただろうか」（そのような教訓に対して私たちは何をできているだろうか）
(私) I would like to mention the progress of solutions to such lessons.
(修正後) I would like to mention the progress of our resulting actions.

・「神戸では、山を削ってその土砂で海を埋め立ててきた」
(私) The city of Kobe was constructed by cutting hills and filling the ocean with it.
(修正後) The city of Kobe was constructed by cutting through hills and disposing the excavated earth in the ocean.
(ポイント) この箇所は、意味を尋ねられたほど、分かりにくかったそうです。

・「過度の集中は効率的だが脆弱である」
(私) The excessive concentration is efficient but vulnerable.
(修正後) The excessive concentration is efficient but causes vulnerability.

・「私たちの便利なライフスタイルを捨てる」
(私) get rid of our convenient lifestyle
(修正後) let go of our convenient lifestyle

・「豊かさの意味を知る」
(私) know what means “being rich”
(修正後) know what it means to “be rich”
