「反○○デモ」 [日常会話]
ブラジルで反大統領デモが起こっていて、それによる業務への影響レポートを書きました。
「反大統領デモ」はanti-president demonstration じゃないなあと思い、調べてみると、
demonstration against the president が良いと分かりました。
Googleの件数を頼りにはしない方が良いですが、一桁違うとさすがに違うと思います。
anti-president demonstrationは、たった140件。
demonstration against the presidentは15万件以上。
anti-にする時は、事象が来ます。
anti-war demonstrationで89000件以上、
anti-nuclear demonstrationで32000件以上が出てきました。

TOEIC Speaking and Writing Testの結果が来ました。 [日常会話]
Speakingは180点、
Writingは190点でした。
発音レベルはMedium、イントネーションとストレスレベルもMedium。どちらも下手なので、やっぱりな、という感じです。練習で何とかなるものだろうか・・・。
詳しい講評はホームページ上では分からないので、上記よりも詳しいことは分かりません。
スピーキングはとても苦手であがり症な上、肝心な情報を入れ忘れたわりには・・・という感じです。
ライティングは、楽しく書けましたが、時間切れでBest regardsの後のコンマを入れられなかった等、満点(200点)のはずはないと思っていたので、予想通りでした。
何となく、もう一度受けてもこれ以上の点を取れなさそうですが、不慣れで失敗した点もあったので、2-3年したらまた受けてみようかなと思います。
「インフルエンザの流行が懸念されています」 [日常会話]
「インフルエンザの流行が懸念されています。手洗いとうがいを励行してください」という張り紙が貼ってありました。
その下に英語で、
The flu epidemic is concerned. Please wash your hands and enforce gargle.
と書いてありました。全体的にかなり不自然な気がしたので、アメリカ人に聞いてみました。
「自分だったら、
The flu epidemic is a concern. Please wash your hands and gargle.と書く」、
と言われました。
張り紙の表現は、ほぼ、不自然ではない表現だったのだと分かりました。
ただし、アメリカでは、風邪というと、手を洗うこととか、"If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth."とは言うけれど、「うがい」はあまり言われないそうです。
cover your mouth with 何?と聞いたら、普通は省略されるが、with hands/a handkerchief/Kleenexなどかな、とのことでした。
TOEIC Speaking & Writing Testを受けてみました。 [日常会話]
私はスピーキングがものすごく苦手なので、スピーキングのあるテストは今までほぼずっと逃げてきました。
ほとんと唯一のスピーキングテストと言ってよい英検も、挑戦したことがありません。二次試験とかの問題を本屋で立ち読みしたことがあるのですが、どうも何となく自分に合わないと思って、逃げてきました。
一方、TOEIC Speaking & Writing Testは、易しめの問題から始まるのと内容が面白そうだったのとで、何となく好印象を持ち、受けてみようかなと思いました。試験対策は、一人ででもできるという印象を持ちました。
Speakingは、やはり、はちゃめちゃになってしまいました。余計なことまで喋ってしまいました。あ、やば、と思いましたが取り消しできません。論旨もめちゃくちゃになってしまいました。試験会場では他の受験生の声は意外に聞こえてきませんでしたが、本当に静かな環境というわけではありません。そういう環境の中での予行練習を行う必要があると思いました。
一方、Writingはかなりできたのではないかと自負しています。ただし、他の受験生も同様だろうと思うので、結果がどう出るか、分かりません。
結果は3月に出るようです。こわい・・・
「超字幕」 [日常会話]

今まで、映画で英語のリスニングを勉強するのは効果的だと分かってはいたのですが、DVDでいちいち字幕の有無を操作したりするのが面倒で、勉強できませんでした。
ラインナップの中では一番私にとって理解しやすいと思った、「不都合な真実」(An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore)を見てみました。
勉強しやすさにびっくり!です。
利点は、以下の通りです。
1.日/英の字幕の有無の操作性が良い。シャドーイングやリプロダクションに便利。
(既存のDVDデッキやパソコン用DVDソフトは、字幕の有無のメニューは2~3クリック以上が必要だったりして、操作性が悪かったです・・・うちの機械だけかもしれませんが)
2.「お気に入り字幕」機能を使うと、文単位で、聞き取れなかった文とか覚えたい文にしるしを付けられる。
3.それぞれの単語にマウスを当てると、語の意味がポップアップで出てくる。分かりにくそうな文章は、解説も入っている。
特に優れているのが、日/英の字幕の有無をワンクリックで操作できることでした。
一方、不満に思うこともあります。
・ラインナップが少ない。超メジャーな、比較的最近の映画しか発売されていない。今後に期待したいです。
・音量がちょっと小さめ(リスニング力がないので大きい音でないと聞き取れないということもありますが)
・辞書機能はありがたいが、句動詞は対応されていない。(例えば"put out"だと、putとoutそれぞれの意味しか表示されない。)
また、何故か、知りたい語に限って、バグなのか、表示されない。
・(USB版はそうでもないが)ダウンロード版は、パソコンに落とすまでに時間がかかりすぎた。家はもちろんADSLですが、一作品のダウンロードに10分以上、その後の「インストール」にも5分以上かかった。ダウンロードもインストールも問題なく完了したが、ちょっとややこしい感があった。
・普通のDVDより割高な作品もある。
・字幕が、セリフを完全には反映しておらず、時々省略されている。(勉強には一応支障無い程度です。細部にこだわる方にとっては不満かも)
そうは言っても、普通のDVDと比べて、勉強しやすさを考えれば、非常に画期的だと思いました。
「不都合な真実」を見終わり、他にも数タイトル購入しました。
観光英検2級を受けました [日常会話]
ここ1年以上、仕事と、そのための勉強を自転車操業的にやっていて、資格から完全に遠ざかっていました。
TOEICは、以前受けた以上の点数を取れそうもないし、難しい資格はエネルギーが要るし、と思い、観光英検2級ならと思い、受けてみました。
きっかけは、時々、公的な場でのアナウンス的看板の英訳を頼まれることがあるのですが、英語としてナチュラルな決まり文句的表現が分からず、いつも、とても時間がかかっていて、ふとしたきっかけで観光英検2級の問題集を見たら、この悩みを少し解決してくれそうな文章が載っていたので、その勉強のついでに受けてみました。
まだまだアナウンス的看板の英語をスラスラ書ける程には全くなっていませんが、問題集は役に立ったと思います。

日本語とは少し違うニュアンスになっている英文もありますが、ネイティブの先生は日本語を知らないので、私が言った英語を基に修正しています。

最近結構書店に並んでいる本です。
2週間で英語が飛び込んでくる、と書かれていて、効果がありそうだと思いました。著者は医学博士で説得力がありますし、周波数、なるほど!と思いました。
最初のうちは、高い音を聞くことによって、効果がありそうな予感が、とてもありました。
ところが、5日、6日と聞きすすめていくうちに、英語ニュース(MXテレビで、姉妹局のNew York Oneからのニュースを、朝、見ている)の、速く読まれる部分が、もともとあまり分からないのにもっと聞き取りにくくなるのを感じ始めました。
つまり、私の弱点は、周波数というより、スピードの速さだったということが分かりました。(私の場合は、です。このCDを聞くことによってリスニングが上達する人は多いと思います。)
このCDはスピードが比較的遅く、また、短文が多いので聞き取りやすい、というのが原因でした。現に、短い文は聞き取りやすくなりました。自分の弱点がはっきりしただけでも、良かったのかもしれません。ということで、今後は、スピードの速い英語に慣れるべく練習をしなければならないと思いました。
ちなみに、首都圏の方で、朝の7:00台のニュースについて、NHKは硬いし、民放はワイドショーぽくて嫌だと思う方は、東京MXテレビ「モーニングサプリ」(7:00~8:30)が、意外にお勧めです。東京のニュースが多いですが、毎日日替わりで日本在住の外国人が出演し、自国についていろいろ語ってくれます。この番組を見るだけで急にインターナショナルな気分になれます。「独自の視点でお送りするニュースヘッドライン」(本当に独自の視点)、中吊り広告紹介、彼らの出身国の歌のコーナーが面白いです。月曜日:アメリカ人、火曜日:オーストラリア人、水曜日:スリランカ人、木曜日:ロシア人、金曜:インド人、が出演します。
